Students often find speaking quite challenging in French class. They find it really useful to engage with activities that require them to reproduce language they are already familiar with, be creative with that language in order to produce new language, and also enable them to engage with entirely new language. This set features 100 conversation starters / speaking prompts in question format, featuring a broad range of language and grammar points. The CEFR level is roughly B1-B2, with some reference to C1. The set includes a reference sheet with all the language featured in the set, and a planning sheet. The activity works well as a spontaneous speaking activity, and students also benefit from a more focused approach, where they can research and plan more detailed and complex responses as their competence and skills develop.

The set features a broad range of language and grammar, some of which students may not yet have formally covered, with several questions focusing on si + imperfect + conditional clauses, and a significant amount of implicit input on a range of grammatical concepts, such as agreement with preceding direct object, use of the subjunctive and so on. It's useful to include new or unknown language in learning activities, as this gives students the opportunity both to practise and consolidate knowledge, to engage with and actively learn new language, and so to progress in their learning.

The starters broadly address the following themes:

music, film & television literature & culture : personal life, information & preferences : leisure & free time : health & well-being : history & society : recent & current events : travel, tourism & holidays : technology & social media : likes & dislikes : local environment : environmental & social issues : education & studies

Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in French. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. The set works equally well as writing prompts.

Remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying worksheet, remembering that these are starters / prompts, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.

Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. It’s useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas.
