This document contains a complex exercise on cells which encourages students to apply their knowledge on cell types and cell structure to the topic of "Corals and Zooxanthellae".

The exercise is tailored to require 45 min of work when done in "one sitting" and in writing.

It includes the solutions and references to the following competencies:

-        I can use models to give a justified statement on a biological phenomenon.

-        I can evaluate the pros and cons to a question.

-        I can name the main cell types and give examples.

-        I can name the parts of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells visible with an electron microscope.

-        I can compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells with regard to their components.

-        I can compare plant and animal cells with regard to their size, shape, and components.

-        I can name the respective functions of cell organelles, and I can explain their role and importance for the survival and functionality of the cell.

-        Using specific examples, I can illustrate how the organelles within a cell interact with each other, and how they depend on each other functionally.
