This law of conservation of mass lab is your best friend if you are looking for quick and simple 6th grade science project ideas that are easy to prep and safe to execute.
Use this law of conservation mass lab in your middle school science classroom once your students already know the composition of molecules and atoms, the states of matter and how temperatures affects molecular movement.
I was wondering for a long time how to do law of conservation of mass in my Science classroom, because the concept seemed so abstract.
Who would have thought that it was during the 2020 pandemic and distance learning, that I got the idea for this ice cube melting Science experiment.
The worksheet with the graphics of the zip loc bag and the molecules as red dots alone helped my 6th grade Science class comprehend the law of conservation of mass, such that my learners were able to explain why the open zip loc bag weighed less without even reading the text or completing the cloze.
Talk about the power of visual learning!
However, be sure to cover states of matter and the structure of molecules before this ice cube melting experiment, so your class has the knowledge AND THE VOCABULARY to describe and explain what they are observing.
