These English paired speaking prompt cards are an ideal way to promote speaking. Working in small groups or pairs helps students feel confident about talking in English without feeling ‘on the spot’, or worried about not getting their pronunciation and accent right in front of the whole class. The prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and focus on vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that students are generally engaging with from advanced beginner English into intermediate English level. ENGLISH SPEAKING PROMPTS ENGLISH WRITING PROMPTS ESL EFL ELL INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH ADVANCED ENGLISH SPEAKING AND WRITING ACTIVITIESStudents often find speaking and writing quite challenging, and benefit from activities that require them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language. The prompts are in question format, featuring language which students may not have formally covered. It's useful to include a broad range of language and grammar to maximise learning opportunities. Tenses include present, future, near future, perfect and conditional. Question formats are likewise varied, so that students can practise the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. Students should use the questions themselves as a frame of reference to create responses. Remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. This set features 100 prompts for speaking and writing, addressing a broad range of language and grammar. The CEFR level is roughly A2-B2. The set includes a reference booklet and a planning booklet for class and home learning. The activity works well as a spontaneous speaking / creative writing activity, and students also benefit from a more focused approach, where they can research and plan more detailed and complex responses as their competence and skills develop.Students may not have formally covered all the language and grammar featured, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also actively learning it. Encourage students to look for cues and prompts in the questions themselves, and this enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to use it creatively in their responses.Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language, as this avoids students simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts.
