LESEVERSTÄNDNIS ENGLISCH ESL EFL ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION HOUSE AND HOME 18 DIFFERENTIATED TEXTS WITH ANSWER KEYS

This resource features 18 differentiated reading comprehension texts, focusing on house and home. There is an additional learning focus on English grammar, including sentence structure and word order, question formats, verb conjugation, singular and plural, and locational prepositions. It comprises six sets of three texts of increasing challenge, with an accompanying vocabulary bank sheet, which students use to note new vocabulary or particular grammatical points they want to look more closely at. This enables them to develop an easily accessible vocabulary bank, and provides additional opportunity to practise writing and spelling.

The texts address the following: house; living room; dining room; kitchen; bedroom and bathroom. The individual texts are crafted to increase challenge gradually, presenting information in slightly more complex language, and including new information. Each text has 6 questions, and these are also differentiated, moving from repeated straightforward and factual formats, to those requiring students to think a little more laterally, and to craft their responses accordingly. They may include vocabulary not directly featured in the text, which is an effective way of encouraging students to think carefully about what they are reading, both in the texts, and in the questions. Students should ideally work through the texts in numerical, rather than random order.

The set comprises the following non-editable files:

= six sets of three differentiated texts focusing on a particular part of the home (house, living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom, bathroom); includes a vocabulary bank template for students to complete.

= answer key for self- and peer- assessment.  It's fine to share this with your students electronically to save prep time and expense.

The CEFR level is roughly A1-A2, ideal for students in the second to third year of their English learning programme.  The content is also suitable for adult learners. The set is ideal for both class and home learning, allowing students to work independently, and at their own pace.

The texts are available with both colour and BW images. All the information about colours is within the individual texts, so you can still use the BW versions. Students often prefer to self-assess, and it’s fine to provide them with an electronic version of the answer key to save prep time and costs.

It’s useful to read the texts aloud as a whole-group first, which also helps students develop competence in speaking and pronunciation, as well as their general confidence. Students also benefit from access to bilingual dictionaries. They can use the texts as templates to develop their own creative writing skills as a follow-on activity from the reading comprehension.

The Lively Learning Classroom offers a wide range of ESL / EFL English resources, including special offer bundles and freebies.

Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The resource is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed in any way outside your own classroom.   Please read the Terms of Use.
