Task / challenge cards are an ideal language learning activity, and really help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their English language skills in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.

This set focuses on English dates, days, months and seasons, which is usually described as beginner English vocabulary. The questions however are aimed at advanced beginner English into intermediate English students, roughly CEFR A2-B1, as working with more complex language as quickly as possible helps progress students’ learning and gives them a more realistic experience of the language they are learning. Students at A1 level definitely benefit from working with the set too, as it provides a real challenge which allows them to engage with a broader range of language, which aids their learning progression. They may need access to reference resources such as a bilingual dictionary.

The questions range in complexity and challenge, and some call upon prior and new knowledge too, helping students make links and build bridges in their learning. Questions and answers address a range of grammatical concepts, such as question formats and sentence structure. Students may not at this stage have formally engaged with all the language and grammar included in the set, and this makes the activity equally about practising and consolidating English language skills and actively learning new language and grammar.

There is a UK theme to several questions, for example Boxing Day and Saint Andrew’s Day in Scotland, with some reference to USA / Canada dates, such as Labor Day.

To maximise the learning potential of the questions, look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices. Identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses.

The set comprises the following non-editable files:

= 48 differentiated question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminate if possible, as the cards are more learner-friendly, and will remain in excellent condition for years. To save prep time, simply laminate and distribute pages of questions, rather than cutting out individual cards. This works particularly well for pair or small-group learning stations / centres in class time.
= answer key - providing students with additional opportunity to engage with language, helping them develop more independence in their learning - and a great teacher time-saver too
= answer recording booklet - print and photocopy an appropriate number for your class. These are useful for more formal assessment purposes - students generally use their
class workbooks to note and work out responses, saving prep time and expense.
= mini-reference sheet showing days, months, seasons and a range of dates. The relevant prepositions are also included, for example on Monday (s), the ’s’ illustrating that this format is also grammatically acceptable for a repeated action.
