Christmas in Devon - PICTURE DICTIONARY WORDMATS

Practise key words before AND/OR after reading my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl's Christmas in Devon'.These wordmats can be used in lots of different ways:1) I spy with my little eye … A Christmas tree! (children point at the tree or place their rubber on it, for example).  This can also be done as pairwork.2) colour dictation - I spy with my little eye … a blue bauble!3) bingo - each child chooses three pictures and places something on them, e.g. counters/glass nuggets.  The teacher draws the picture cards at random and once their three have been called, the children shout 'Bingo!'.This can also be played in groups with a bingo master for each group.4) hide the wordcards / flashcards around the room and the children label the pictures themselves = copy-writingDifferentiation: they use a pencil to write the words how they think they are spelt and then find the word cards in the room to check their work.Have fun reading and rhyming with Brown Owl!    For more information about my series of rhyming picture books, please visit www.readandrhyme.at

Christmas in Devon - STORY STICKS

Story Sticks are a fun and interactive way to use language creatively. Here are some example uses:The main use is to RETELL a story. This can be done by the teacher, who uses the story sticks instead of showing the pages in the book.It can also be done by the pupils in a group, in pairs or individually.I also like to let the children choose two/three of their favourite pictures, colour & create their own story sticks, and then hold them up when they hear the word in the story. After the story they can take their sticks home as a reminder of the lesson. Maybe they’ll even talk about it when they get home and remember the language too.The story sticks can also be used for a game of ‚I spy‘. E.g. I spy, with my little eye, BAUBLES! (children hold up the stick if they have it) & for playing change places in a circle. E.g. Change places if you have got GRANDMA/GRANDPA/COUSIN FLO etc.Maybe you can think of another use too? Please let me know if you do!ADVANTAGES OF STORY STICKSThey encourage interaction They aid language comprehension They improve listening skillsThey revise vocabulary They keep hands busyThey promote teamwork (if retelling in a group)I laminated the coloured version so that I can use them many times. The children get the black & white paper version to colour & create themselves.I hope you have fun retelling and learning the words from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl's Christmas in Devon'.For more information about my rhyming picture books, please visit: www.readandrhyme.at
