These images come from the rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl at the Seashore'. Young learners can practise key words from the story by making their own animals on sticks.
You can play a game of 'I spy with my little eye' or 'I hear with my little ear' (Both expressions come up in the book)
The teacher says what they can see/hear and the children hold up the correct animal.
The sticks can also be used for a game of change places. All the children sit in a circle and the teacher stands in the middle. The teacher says 'starfish' and all children with a starfish change places. Whilst they are changng places, the teacher sits down. The child in the middle can choose the next animal, e.g. 'seagulls!'. If someone shouts 'seashore!' then everyone has to change places.
The illustrator has hidden starfish and crabs on lots of pages in the book. The sticks could also be held up when the kids spot the animals in the background whilst the teacher is reading the story.
