 These Stop and Swap Cards covering continuous tenses (present progressive and past progressive) can be used with the whole class. Students mingle and whenever they encounter another student, they talk about their cards and then swap them and continue mingling.  You can also simply let them wander around class and the students pass them on and talk about them with one or two partners. Another possibility is to give every group one set of cards.  There is vocabulary help on the back of the cards so that more challenged students will have the help they need to participate and actually talk in English while the faster students can talk freely about the pictures.

For them, it's simply a fun activity with the benefit of revising the structure, too. Students mingle and whenever they encounter another student, they talk about their cards and then swap them and continue mingling.  Another possibility is to give every group/pair one set of cards.  There is vocabulary help on the back of the cards so that more challenged students will have the help they need to participate and actually talk in English while the faster students can talk freely.

These conversation prompts for teens are a fun way to get students talking. It’s a great speaking activity at the beginning of the term or also as a substitute lesson. You can basically use it in any lesson that is designed to get your students’ talking. Students can talk to each other in small groups or pairs, which makes them lose their inhibitions faster. You can rotate them after a certain amount of time, so that they talk to different students during the activity. My students always have great fun doing this activity and everyone can talk according to their own proficiency. It is possible to answer in short sentences if the students are still early learners but more proficient students can also simply have a conversation with the questions as the conversation starter.
