This resource includes a game board with 30 numbered squares and 30 cards containing sentences with gaps to complete using the Present Continuous tense.
An interactive version is also included, allowing students to play on electronic devices.
The game can be played as a traditional board game using counters and a dice. Students take turns rolling the dice and moving their counters to the corresponding square. They then pick up the matching card and conjugate the verb in brackets in the Present Continuous tense. The first player to reach square 30 is the winner.
The game can also be adapted using simple classroom materials: lolly sticks, a permanent marker or stickers, a timer, and a container (e.g. a pencil pot, a glass, a cup, or a small bucket).
Write the numbers and words on the lolly sticks, or cut out and stick the words onto them.
Place all the sticks in the container.
Students can play in pairs or teams. On each turn, a student draws a stick from the container and either says the word or makes a sentence using the number on the stick.
To make the game more exciting, include some special sticks:
"Boom" – The student must return all the sticks they have collected to the container.
"Boom All" – Both teams return all their sticks to the container, and the game starts again.
"Steal 1" – The student takes one stick from the opposing team.
"Exchange" – Both teams swap one stick.
"Bonus" – The team keeps the stick and has another turn.
"Miss a Turn" – The team misses their next turn.
The winner is the player or team that has collected the most sticks when the time runs out.
For an extra challenge, assign points to the numbered sticks. The winner is then the player or team with the highest total score.
