The aim of this card game is to practise yes/no questions and short answers using the past perfect simple.

This game is a variation of the classic card game Go Fish, in which students try to find matching pairs and collect as many pairs as possible.

The teacher should print two copies of the resource. The cards are shuffled and dealt so that each student has five cards (seven in smaller groups and three in larger ones). The remaining cards are placed face down in a pile in the middle of the table.

Students take turns to play. On each turn, a student asks a classmate whether they have a particular card, using the question written on the card (e.g. Had you ever tried an extreme sport?). If the classmate has the matching card, they must reply with the appropriate short answer (e.g. Yes, I had.) and hand the card over.

If the classmate does not have the card, they respond with a negative short answer (e.g. No, I hadn’t.), and the rest of the group says Go Fish. The student who asked the question then draws a card from the pile.

The game continues until all the cards have been matched. The student with the most pairs at the end is the winner.
