What happens when we actually pay attention?

Inspired by the poetry and ideas of Mary Oliver, The Art of Noticing is a thought-provoking B2–C2 lesson that invites students to slow down, observe the ordinary world and consider what constant digital stimulation may be doing to our attention.

Students discover who Mary Oliver was and encounter ideas from The Summer Day and Wild Geese before moving beyond traditional literary analysis. Through observation experiments, vocabulary work, discussion and creative writing, they explore how careful attention can transform something completely ordinary into something worth thinking — and writing — about.

The lesson includes the 60-Second Rebellion, an attention experiment, poetry-based activities, a 2026 technology and attention debate, and a final creative challenge in which students become observers themselves.
