What happens to a society when half its young people lose access to education?

When Girls Can't Learn is a ready-to-teach C1–C2 EFL critical-thinking lesson that moves beyond a generic discussion of women's rights and asks students to investigate the wider consequences of lost educational opportunity.

Students begin with one change — girls can no longer attend secondary school — and follow its possible effects across individual lives, employment, healthcare, professional services, economic independence and future generations.

The lesson develops sophisticated causal reasoning. Students learn to distinguish between direct, likely, possible and uncertain consequences, and between what we can reasonably infer and what would require stronger evidence.

Activities include a Ripple Effect causal chain, One Girl, Three Generations, The Missing Professionals, academic cause-and-consequence vocabulary, rights-vs-economic arguments, C1–C2 discussion, and a final 20-Year Forecast policy task.

The lesson ultimately leads to one deceptively difficult question:

Is education primarily something an individual has a right to — or something a society cannot afford to lose?
