More Than Words is a ready-to-teach B2–C1 EFL speaking and critical-thinking lesson exploring the fascinating relationship between language, identity, belonging, family and culture.

Students examine why people learn heritage languages, compare practical and emotional motivations for language learning, and consider how learning English may serve a very different purpose: opening doors to communication, education and opportunity.

Throughout the lesson, students are encouraged not simply to give opinions, but to justify, challenge and reconsider them.

Students will:

• explore motivations such as belonging, identity, ancestry, cultural continuity and opportunity

• compare heritage-language learning with learning a global language

• discuss challenging statements about language and identity

• distinguish concepts such as assimilation vs integration and preserve vs reclaim

• debate a realistic family dilemma — and then switch sides

• reflect on their own reasons for learning English

• create a personal Language Map

• discuss the central question: Is a language something we use — or something we belong to?
