BACK TO SCHOOL - Escape Room

Bild in der Beschreibung des Unterrichtsmaterials BACK TO SCHOOL - Escape Room von MyTeachingFactory #1

Escape Rooms are a motivating method for English lessons, where students must solve various challenges in small groups or individually to determine the code for opening a treasure chest (or another container). The puzzles in this escape room are designed for beginner English classes. It is recommended that 1-2 lessons be planned to implement the unit.

The Back to School Escape Room is suitable for the first English lesson after the summer holidays. It focuses on various stories from summer. The grammatical focus is on the simple past tense. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on reading skills, as well as listening, speaking (warm-up), and writing skills (post-work).

Challenges:

  • Challenge #1: Postcard from Liam

This is a reading comprehension activity. The students read the content of the postcard and answer questions about it.

  • Challenge #2: Email from Olivia

In this activity, the students are to fill in the blanks with the correct verb forms (simple present and simple past). This challenge particularly focuses on helping the children review common regular and irregular verbs.

  • Challenge #3: Phone Chat

In this task, the students are to arrange a phone conversation in the correct order. The conversation includes many abbreviations (SMS language) used by teenagers or native speakers in English-speaking regions. A vocabulary sheet is provided as a resource for the students.

  • Challenge #4: Voice Message from Yara

This challenge is a listening comprehension activity. The students listen to the recording and complete the tasks on the worksheet. There are two versions of the audio recording: one at a normal speaking speed and one at a slower speaking speed. Additionally, a transcript is provided, which can be offered as support for students who need extra help.

Extra material:

  • CONVERSATION CARDS:

In total, there are 32 conversation cards with questions about their summer holidays in the simple past. The cards can be used as a great introduction for activities like a Stop and Swap game (warm-up).

  • WRITING TASK (Extra Work - Post from Amira):

This task is designed as an additional activity for faster students to avoid idle time. The students are supposed to write a comment on a post.

  • WRITING TASK (Post Work):

As a conclusion to the unit or as a homework assignment, students can write about their own holiday experience in the form of a social media post. They can choose whether to write about a real or fictional experience. In the following lesson, the stories can be read aloud, and classmates can guess whether the experiences actually happened or were made up. A "Help Sheet" with sentence starters and useful vocabulary is provided for this task.

Escape rooms are a great way to organise a fun and meaningful lesson with students on topics such as Easter, Halloween or Christmas. But grammar topics can also be practised and consolidated very well with escape rooms! The advantage is that the concept of an escape room automatically motivates students and makes them open to solving tasks and exercises. You should plan 1-2 school hours to complete the unit.
