Zungenbrecher (tongue twisters) are one of my students’ favourite warm-ups or brain breaks. Done at the very beginning of the class, they put the learners in a good mood for mastering German and help them get their mouth muscles and vocal cords ready for articulating tricky German diphthongs.

How to use

1.Nominate a certain number of points for flawless pronunciation depending on the category of the tongue twister i.e. the longer and harder it is, the more points it’s worth.

2.Either in a virtual or traditional classroom, divide the students into groups or pairs and provide them with a dice. Let them choose the desired category and then roll the dice. One of the students must keep an eye on correctness and therefore give the points. The one who gets the highest score wins.

3.In case you want to have more fun, give your students a bunch of hard candies or bread rings to put into their mouths and thus articulating the tongue twisters. Yet make sure this activity is safe for everyone and there is no risk of choking.
