Germany is the only industrialized country with no general speed limit. This even inspires tourists to come to Germany for “speed tourism”, i.e., driving on a motorway as fast as you can to test the power of your own car or your rented car. However, the issue of a speed limit has been part of many controversial discussions. A general speed limit on motorways was among the ideas to reduce CO2 emissions, it would lessen the number of road accidents. Opponents doubt that a speed limit contributes to climate protection a lot and call a speed limit an attack on their freedom.
