I just love a good pub quiz, and so do my students.

A pub quiz takes almost no preparation and is tons of fun. It can be used at the beginning or ending of the year or any time in between. 

How does it work?

You let the students form groups. They can even come up with names for their teams. Then they just need a piece of paper and a pen, and you just have to read out the questions (don't read the answers). You give the students time to discuss and choose an answer after every question, then you move on. (For some it would be ideal if you could show them pictures as well, but it is not necessary.) At the end, teams switch their sheets, you tell them the answers and they correct each others answers. The team with the most correct answers wins!

The great thing about these questions is that they are all what I call guessable. Most people don't know the answers to these questions, but with some thinking you can make an educated guess. 

I start the year with this pub quiz with my year 9 students. We use Green Line and the year 9 book focuses on the English-speaking world.
