The aim of this card game is to practise asking questions and giving short answers using the Present Continuous tense.

This game is based on the classic card game “Go Fish”, in which students have to find matching pairs of cards and collect as many pairs as possible.

The teacher should print two copies of the resource. The cards are shuffled and dealt so that each student has five cards (seven cards in small groups and three cards in larger groups). The remaining cards are placed face down in a pile in the middle of the table.

Students take turns playing the game. Each student asks a classmate if they have a particular card by using the question written on their card (e.g. “Is Kevin playing the guitar at the moment?”). If the other student has the matching card, they must answer with the corresponding short answer (e.g. “Yes, he is.”) and give the card to the student who asked the question.

If the student does not have the matching card, they reply with a negative short answer (e.g. “No, he isn’t.”). The other players say “Go Fish”, and the student who asked the question takes a card from the pile.

The game continues until all the cards have been used. The student with the most pairs at the end of the game is the winner.
