22 Conversation Cards to use during the english class:

These conversation cards are a simple, low-prep speaking exercise for the classroom. Pupils walk around, pair up, and ask each other the question on a card. On the back of each card, pupils find a sentence starter (e.g. My favourite… is…) and helpful word choices, so everyone can take part confidently.

Learning goals

• practise asking and answering questions politely
• build vocabulary and spoken fluency
• improve listening skills and turn-taking
• strengthen confidence and positive classroom relationships

How to use

• Print and cut out the cards (laminating is recommended for repeated use).
• Give each pupil one card (or place cards in a box for pupils to pick).
• Pupils move around the room, find a partner, and take turns asking and answering.
• After both have answered, they swap cards or find a new partner.

Differentiation

• Encourage confident speakers to add a reason: …because…
• Allow pupils to choose from the options or add their own ideas.
• For extra support, practise the sentence starters together before starting.

Classroom tips

• Set a timer (e.g. 1–2 minutes per partner or a total time e.g. 5 minutes)
• Optional: finish with a short class share-out (“I found out that…”).
