Reading Chain – Activity Instructions
A Reading Chain is a collaborative speaking and reading activity that encourages students to read aloud, listen carefully, and follow a sequence of connected sentences. Each student holds one card, and when they hear their sentence, they read it aloud and pass the “chain” to the next student.
It’s interactive, builds confidence in speaking, and reinforces natural language patterns.
✔ Practice Present Perfect (Have you ever…? / I have… / I haven’t… yet / I have just… / I have already…)
✔ Improve speaking fluency & pronunciation
✔ Listen for grammar structures in context
✔ Build confidence in reading aloud
✔ Engage all students in a fun, structured way
Print, cut, and distribute one card to each student.
Give students a moment to read their card silently.
Choose a student with the START card to begin.
That student reads their sentence aloud.
The next student listens for their cue (“Who has…?” / “I have…”) and continues.
The activity ends when the END card is reached.
💡 Mix the cards before handing them out
💡 Encourage clear and confident reading
💡 If a student struggles, allow a peer whisper support
💡 Time the activity and repeat later to beat the class “record”
💡 Works great as warm-up, cool-down, or grammar practice center
