Beschreibung

Short Description:

In a biology lab, a disease outbreak in a nearby city is being investigated. One of the samples, referred to as "Sample 42," shows strange characteristics        

Teacher Notes:

The material can be used both as a fun introduction to the unit "Immunology"/”Immunobiology” and as a way to explore content on viruses/bacteria. Background information is useful but not absolutely necessary.
It is also possible to use it in cell biology on the topic of bacteria/prokaryotes.
An informational text can be used as accompanying support, or alternatively, the textbook can be used.

The guiding story with the guiding question (found on the worksheet) is suitable as an introduction. The included images can be used as a motivational tool.

If students are not yet familiar with the Mystery method, the method can be explained using the "Mystery" method card.

For bilingual purposes, a vocabulary list with key terms that students might not be familiar with is provided. It is available in three formats, and the teacher can choose which one to use:

  • Pre-filled: English word, German word, and a short description
  • English word, German word (to be filled out by students), and a short description
  • English word and a short description only

Thematic Classification: Biology, Immunology, Eukaryotes/Prokaryotes

Required Prior Knowledge: Possibly genetics, but not strictly necessary. The informational text will help.

Required Time: 45-90 minutes, depending on prior knowledge
