28 October 1940 – More Than Just “OXI” is a visual, discussion-based EFL lesson for B1+–C1 learners, designed to help students understand what actually happened on 28 October 1940 — and why the date still matters in Greece today.
Rather than treating Ohi Day as a list of historical facts, the lesson gradually builds understanding through real historical context, archival images, vocabulary, timelines, key figures, photo analysis, decision-making and critical thinking. Students learn about the Italian ultimatum, the role of Ioannis Metaxas, Mussolini, Grazzi and Papagos, the Greek counteroffensive, the German invasion, the Axis occupation and the contribution of ordinary people, including the Women of Pindus.
The resource also challenges oversimplified versions of history. Learners explore the difference between the symbolic “OXI” and Metaxas’s reported actual response, examine the complexity of remembering a decision made by an authoritarian leader, and consider concepts such as sovereignty, resistance, courage, sacrifice, propaganda and more.
A highlight of the lesson is the historical decision dilemma, where students imagine advising the Greek government before knowing the outcome of the war. They must weigh the risks of accepting, refusing or trying to negotiate, encouraging meaningful speaking and evidence-based reasoning rather than simple right-or-wrong answers.
The final task asks students to explain the importance of 28 October in their own words to a foreign teenager — a simple but powerful way to check whether they have genuinely understood the history rather than memorised it.
Ideal for:
B1+–C1 learners • teenagers • Ohi Day / 28 October lessons • history through English • CLIL-style lessons • vocabulary development • speaking • critical thinking • cultural awareness
Approximate lesson time: 55–60 minutes.
