What should a good education actually give students: knowledge, independence, practical skills, confidence—or something more?
This B2–C1 lesson pack invites teenage and adult learners to explore education through their own experiences, a short history of schooling, educational approaches from Finland, Japan, Estonia and Germany, memorable teachers from film, and accessible ideas from John Dewey, Paulo Freire and Hannah Arendt.
The material does not present one educational system or teaching method as the perfect answer. Instead, students learn to identify benefits, limitations and trade-offs before forming a more balanced opinion.
The lesson includes:
• carefully supported topic vocabulary
• accessible reading texts and comprehension work
• international education-system comparisons
• discussion of inspiring and effective teachers
• educational ideas explained in learner-friendly language
• problem-based teaching-method scenarios
• structured speaking and critical-thinking activities
• a final school-design challenge
• a guided B2–C1 speaking task
• detailed teacher notes and suggested answers
The activities gradually move from personal experience and supported understanding to comparison, evaluation and independent speaking. Language support is included throughout, helping students express more nuanced opinions with phrases such as “provided that”, “to some extent”, “this depends on” and “one possible trade-off is”.
Suitable for approximately two 75-minute lessons, or individual sections can be selected for shorter classes.
