Poetry can feel confusing, old-fashioned or simply “not for me”—especially when students are expected to analyse a poem before anyone has shown them how.

This ready-to-use B1+–C1 English lesson offers students an accessible first meeting with poetry. It introduces essential poetry vocabulary, explains difficult ideas through clear examples and guides learners gradually from literal meaning to interpretation.

Students explore a famous stanza from Emily Dickinson’s “Hope is the thing with feathers,” practise supporting an interpretation with evidence and discuss where poetry lives today—from the printed page to performance, music and digital media.
