Brown Owl's Autumn - Bundle of Activities

How many autumn words can you think of?I like to teach dictionary skills with this activity. The children have lots of ideas in their mother tongue but don't nececcarily know the English. equivalent. My favourite online dictionary is Pons.If you don't want to work with dictionaries, then the teacher can be a human dictionary. Children have to ask 'What's ... in English?'.I let the children work in pairs or teams with Tablets or PCs and see how many words they can find in a given time.Why not give points too! If no else has the word, you get 2 points, if someone else has it, then you get just one.You can also use the Brown Owl busy autumn scene as a stimulus and to give them some ideas.N.B. You may find some of the words on the solution sheet a bit difficult for young learners. I just included them for the teachers and because I didn't want to have blank spaces.If you want to spend more time on the topic of autumn, I also have games to consolidate the key words, an autumn poem and story walk.Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!

Practise key autumn vocabulary with these differentiated wordmats.The wordmats can be used in lots of different ways:1) I spy with my little eye … a squirrel! (children point at the squirrel or place their rubber on it, for example).  This can also be done as pairwork.2) colour dictation - I spy with my little eye … a brown acorn!3) bingo - each child chooses three pictures and places something on them, e.g. counters/glass nuggets.  The teacher draws the picture cards at random and once their three have been called, the children shout 'Bingo!'.This can also be played in groups with a bingo master for each group.4) hide the wordcards / flashcards around the room and the children label the pictures themselves = copy-writingDifferentiation: they use a pencil to write the words how they think they are spelt and then find the word cards in the room to check their work.If you want to spend more time on the topic of autumn, I also have games to consolidate the key words, an autumn poem and story walk.  Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!

Young learners can learn key autumn words and use language creatively with these story sticks. The sticks can then be used for various games/activities:1) The teacher introduces autumn words by drawing the story sticks out of a bag and repeating the new language with actions.2) The children hold up the sticks as they hear the words in an story or poem (see Brown Owl's poem).3) Play a game of change places. The children choose one or two sticks and sit in a circle. The teacher removes a chair and stands in the middle."I spy, with my little eye, squirrels!" Anyone with a squirrel stands up and changes places.The next person in the middle says the phrase: "I spy, with my little eye, pumpkins!" All the pumpkins change places.If someone calls AUTUMN TIME then everyone changes places.4) Choose 5 story sticks at random. Quizzes are a real attention grabber and expose children to lots of vocabulary, both old and new. They also improve listening and concentration skills.What am I? 1. I am black.2. I can fly.3. I am little.4. I come out at night.Solution: I am a bat!Children can test their knowledge of 15 autumn words, whilst also practising reading, speaking & listening skills.Variation 1: The teacher reads the clues one by one to the class.    Variation 2: Partner/group work: A quiz master reads the clues one by one. How fast can your partner/the children guess the word? The first to guess wins the card.N.B.
