Brown Owl's Autumn - ABC Challenge

How many autumn words can you think of?I like to teach dictionary skills with this activity. The children have lots of ideas in their mother tongue but don't nececcarily know the English. equivalent. My favourite online dictionary is Pons.If you don't want to work with dictionaries, then the teacher can be a human dictionary. Children have to ask 'What's ... in English?'.I let the children work in pairs or teams with Tablets or PCs and see how many words they can find in a given time. Why not give points too! If no else has the word, you get 2 points, if someone else has it, then you get just one.You can also use the Brown Owl busy autumn scene as a stimulus and to give them some ideas.N.B. You may find some of the words on the solution sheet a bit difficult for young learners. I just included them for the teachers and because I didn't want to have blank spaces. If you want to spend more time on the topic of autumn, I also have games to consolidate the key words, an autumn poem and story walk.Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!

Brown Owl's Autumn - WORDMATS

Practise key autumn vocabulary with these differentiated wordmats. The wordmats can be used in lots of different ways:1) I spy with my little eye … a squirrel! (children point at the squirrel or place their rubber on it, for example).  This can also be done as pairwork.2) colour dictation - I spy with my little eye … a brown acorn!3) bingo - each child chooses three pictures and places something on them, e.g. counters/glass nuggets.  The teacher draws the picture cards at random and once their three have been called, the children shout 'Bingo!'.This can also be played in groups with a bingo master for each group.4) hide the wordcards / flashcards around the room and the children label the pictures themselves = copy-writingDifferentiation: they use a pencil to write the words how they think they are spelt and then find the word cards in the room to check their work.If you want to spend more time on the topic of autumn, I also have games to consolidate the key words, an autumn poem and story walk.  Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!

Anglais - Brown Owl's Autumn - Game Cards

Practise key autumn vocabulary with these game cards. 2 sets available: reader and non-reader/DaZIncludes: pumpkin, mushroom, acorn, apple, bat, leaves, crow, squirrel, mud, trees, fog and pine cone. They can be used for four different games:1) SNAP (2-4 players)Shuffle the cards and deal them between all players.Players put their cards in front of them, face down. Each player turns over a card and lays it in the middle. If two cards on top of each other are the same, players shout snap and place their hands in the middle. The fastest player wins the cards! The winner is the player with all the cards at the end of the game.2) PAIRS - use half the cardsMix the cards and spread them out face down on the table. Each player takes it in turns to choose two cards. If they are the same, they take the cards and turn over another two. The winner is the player with the most pairs at the end of the game.3) OLD MAID (3-4 players)The aim of the game is to have as many pairs as possible.Remove THREE crow cards. The crow is the old maid (schwarzer Peter)Shuffle the remaining cards and deal them between all players.Players look at their cards and place any PAIRS in front of them. Each player chooses one card to pass on and places it in front of them. Players count 3,2,1 and pass the card to the player on their left.If a player has a new pair, they place it on the table in front of them. The game carries on until one player has no cards left. The player with the most cards has won.Any player with the crow tries to pass it on as it does not have a pair.4) HAPPY FAMILIES (3-4 players)The aim of the game is to have as many sets of four same pictures as possible.Shuffle and deal all the cards between the players. If a player has a set of four, they can place it on the table in front of them.Any player starts and can ask another player for a card they need: Have you got a pumpkin? The other player responds with Yes, I have! OR No! I Haven't!The player can continue asking until someone says no.Play then passes to the next player. The game is over when one player has no cards left. The winner is the player with the most sets of four (Quartett)5) CHANGE PLACES - select a few sets of 4 cardsChildren sit in a circle. Each child gets a card. One chair is removed. A pupil stands in the middle and says an autumn word (the teacher can lead this activity at the beginning). The children with this picture stand up and change places. Now someone else hasn't got a seat and picks a word.If someone says "It's autumn" then everyone changes places.Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!For more information visit: www.readandrhyme.at
