Simon Says is a really popular game among young learners. It gets them moving, gets them out of their seats and is fun.Furthermore it improves concentration and listening skills, and the actions help them to remember the language. This set of cards focusses on autumn vocabulary and activities.Rules of the game:If you say SIMON SAYS at the beginning of the sentence, children carry out the action. If you don't say SIMON SAYS, they should stand still. Anyone who does the action when they shouldn't, is out. I usually play a few practice rounds before enforcing this last rule. How to play:LEVEL 1 - single word levelSIMON SAYS you are a pumpkin / jack-o-lantern / a crow / a bat etc.N.B. Don't read the sentences on the card. Just use the pictures and say the basic sentence: You are a ...LEVEL 2 - sentence levelUse the cards in this set and read the sentences. Children do the actions described.E.g. Simon Says you are jumping on a pile of leaves / You are a bat flying around etc.I hope you have fun playing autumn Simon Says with Brown Owl!TIP: the same vocabulary comes up in 'Brown Owl's Autumn' poem.Brown Owl is the star of my rhyming picture book series 'Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl'. BINGO is a great game to practise and consolidate vocabulary. It can be played as a class or in small groups with a quizmaster.I have included a set of picture/word cards for the quizmaster to draw at random. If you print two sets, they double up as a game of pairs too.If someone gets three pictures in a row, they shout LINE!If they get all nine pictures, they shout BINGO!I like to embed each word in a sentence so that the children are exposed to as much language as possible. E.g. Autumn leaves are falling down.In fact, the vocabulary in this game also comes up in my 'Brown Owl's Autumn' poem. You can take lines directly from it: e.g. Fog is hanging in the air. Little squirrels are collecting food. You can even have a pupil take on the role of quizmaster and come up with their own sentences. This is a great method to encourage authentic use of language and allow children to experiment with the language they know.I hope you have fun teaching English with Brown Owl!

Young learners can learn key autumn words and use language creatively with these story sticks. The sticks can then be used for various games/activities:1) The teacher introduces autumn words by drawing the story sticks out of a bag and repeating the new language with actions.2) The children hold up the sticks as they hear the words in an story or poem (see Brown Owl's poem).3) Play a game of change places. The children choose one or two sticks and sit in a circle. The teacher removes a chair and stands in the middle."I spy, with my little eye, squirrels!" Anyone with a squirrel stands up and changes places. The next person in the middle says the phrase: "I spy, with my little eye, pumpkins!" All the pumpkins change places. If someone calls AUTUMN TIME then everyone changes places.4) Choose 5 story sticks at random. Can the children put them into a short story?Have fun reading, rhyming and learning English with Brown Owl!N.B. Brown Owl is the star of my 'Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl' picture books.
