Face Theme for Kindergarten English Language Learner

This is the face unit resource for Kindergarten English Language Learners.

There are 3 sets of flashcards.

Set 1. Parts of the face flashcards. After introducing the parts of face, use the flashcards for graphing the hair color and the eye color. I added the girl’s and the boy’s hair color.

Set 2. Children and the face flashcards. Review the parts of the face by pointing to each part of one the kid’s face. You can also use these flashcards for sorting hair color. Place the flashcards all over the classroom and have the students run to the hair color that matches their own. Count how many children are at each flashcard.

Set 3.Monsters and the face flashcards.
The monsters come in different  colors. Ask questions.

Students: Blue!
Teacher: He is blue monster. Let’s count the eyes.
Teacher and students: one, two, three! Three eyes.
Teacher: Is there a nose?
Students: no!
Teacher: Is there a mouth?
Students: yes!
Teacher: What color is the monster?

Small cards. I am adding the same face flashcards in 4 in one page cards for printing purpose and for online teaching.   Give the students a small piece of paper and have them draw a part of the face.
Teacher: brown eyes.

Cutouts. Use these to review the parts of the face. Place them on top of your own face parts.I did the activity for online teaching and the size was right.

Feed me box and the Cutouts. Use the cutouts to review the parts of the face. I made mine using the b&w template. I printed it onto colored pink paper. I added hair and some stickers that I had. I placed everything on a recycled box.                             Teacher: Feed the nose to the pink monster!
Students: Feed the mouth to the pink monster.

Commands Flashcards. Introduce the commands Touch!, smile! Open! Close!

Show the students the flashcard and have them use their hand as in the flashcard and repeat the command. Teacher: Touch your mouth!

Set 1 of WorksheetsListen and color!  Use magnetic letters to write the words as in the card.

Listen and color pages. The students listen and color as you dictate. Do your own at the same time.      Teacher: Color her hair brown . Color her eyes green. Color her mouth red.

Cut and paste/ make a puzzle. Two worksheets to review numbers.
Students color the parts of the face as indicated by the teacher.
Then, cut by each light gray line. Have the students put together the puzzle by ordering the numbers. Students can say the numbers as they order the puzzle. To go even further, students glue each number line onto a paper and create a puzzle.

More worksheets. Choose the worksheets that will suit your class.

From a worksheet to a puppet. Students trace each face part and then color as you indicate. Then, students can cut each one. Glue the face part onto a craft stick and there you go, you have puppets for your students. Say a face word and have the students put the puppet to match  their own face part.

Number Dictation. The numbers have a body color, colored eyes and colored nose. I turned mine into puppets so it will be easier to show to the students. Tell the students what your number looks like but don’t show them the puppet.

Teacher: It’s number 5. It is pink. It’s eyes are orange. It’s nose is green.                              Students will listen and color the number. When the students are done with that number show it to them and together check if they did it right. This will be a fun listening activity.

Printable Book.  Students color the shapes as indicated in the phrase. They also trace the phrases. Assemble the book and practice reading.  I added a strip of construction paper and gluing each page. I opened two holes and looped yarn. There is a template to create the puppet.

Bingo is always a favorite and it can be done in class or online. The bingo template can be used to sort out face parts. I suggest that you cut face parts from magazines and have them ready before the class. Give the students the bingo template and ask them to sort the face part as they place each cutout on the corresponding part.

Matching Game. I labeled all the cups. Students match each cup to each picture as you read the phrases or words for them.

Maybe a puzzle for those wrap up activities:

Craft. Make paper bag puppets! Fun and easy. Students can use it to greet people to say good bye and to repeat vocabulary for this unit and any other. The puppet can be used to review the face parts.

AwardsPrint the trophies to hand in to the students for all the hard work to end the theme.

Cardigan Buttons
I printed the images and traced onto felt. Cut all the pieces and cut a slit in the middle to pass through the button of the cardigan. The eye was the most difficult one, just pass one piece of the layers of the eye at a time. If you do your cardigan I would love to see it.

HOLIDAYS: Halloween.Flashcards. Here is a set of heads flashcards of the most common Halloween characters.

An easy Halloween Jack-O-Lantern printable book is just fine to add up to the students’ collection. It comes along a puppet template.

Several Halloween worksheets. Some come with tracing lines and others are just for free drawing of the face. It can be free art work or directed drawing or coloring. It can a group project.
