As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to bring a little extra magic into the classroom! What better way to do that than with a creative, hands-on activity inspired by the beloved story The Polar Express? 🚆✨ In this post, I’m excited to introduce my latest resource, The Polar Express Tangram Trains, designed to help students build their math, fine motor, and creative skills while having fun!

What Is the Polar Express Tangram Train Activity?

This resource lets your students design their own trains using tangram shapes—a fun and engaging way to build spatial awareness and reinforce important math concepts. Whether your students are copying one of the three train examples or designing their own imaginative train, this activity will keep them busy and excited while also developing critical thinking skills.

What’s Included in the Resource?

  1. 3 Tangram Train Examples
Your students will begin by copying from three provided examples, which helps them get used to arranging the tangram shapes into a train design. This step is great for reinforcing spatial reasoning and boosting confidence before diving into more creative challenges.

  2. Create Your Own Train!
After completing the examples, students can unleash their creativity and build their very own train using the same tangram shapes. They can experiment with shape combinations, size, and layout to make something completely unique!

  3. Backdrops for Added Fun
The resource includes two different backdrops for students to choose from:

    • Clear backdrop for simplicity and focus on the tangram designs.
    • Polar Express landscape backdrop to bring a touch of holiday magic to their creations! The wintery backdrop is perfect for displaying the completed trains.

How Does This Activity Benefit Students?

This activity not only taps into students’ creativity but also reinforces several key learning areas:

  • Math & Spatial Awareness
Working with tangram shapes introduces or reinforces basic geometry concepts, helping students understand how shapes fit together. It’s also a fantastic way to encourage visual problem-solving and reasoning.

  • Fine Motor Skills
Since this is a cut-and-stick activity, students practice their scissor skills and develop fine motor control as they carefully cut out and arrange their tangram pieces.

  • Creativity & Problem-Solving
Transitioning from copying examples to creating their own designs pushes students to think outside the box, helping them develop creativity while problem-solving in real-time.

Ideas for the Classroom

  • Class Display:
Once the trains are complete, why not turn your classroom into a festive train station? Display students’ creations on a bulletin board for a colorful and interactive holiday exhibit.

  • Math Discussions:
Use this activity as an opportunity for math talks. Ask students how many shapes they used, what shapes they chose for different parts of the train, or even encourage them to count the number of triangles, squares, and rectangles in their designs.
