Brown Owl's Autumn - Bundle of Activities

It‘s autumn and Brown Owl and friends are busy in the forest.What can you see? What can you find?There are many different ways to use this busy autumn scene. Here are a few of my ideas:1) To revise autumn vocabulary that has previously been learned and to generate differentiated speaking opportunites.Children simply say what they can see. The closer they look, the more they'll find! Some children will give short answers: two bats / I can see two bats. Others will give longer ones: I can see two bats flying next to Cat. (Cat has a capital letter as it's her name in my rhyming stories).2) To introduce autumn vocabulary. Again I first see what the children know. If they use a word in their mother tongue, I give them the English (maybe write it on the board for older children) and we repeat it together with an action.3) To play a game of 'I spy'. This can also be played in pairs.Teacher: "I spy, with my little eye ... something orange!"Pupil: "Is it the pumpkin?"Teacher: "Yes, it is! / No, it isn't!"4) To practise reading and writing key autumn words (black and white versions).    5) To calm children down or to help them focus. The full colour verion can be printed on A3 and laminated. Children can find the objects listed at the side on their own.N.B. I have included a version without the written word so that this busy autumn  scene can be used with non-readers, at kindergarten or for teaching key words in other languages too.Using the same vocabulary I have also created a game of 'I have got ... How many autumn words can you think of?I like to teach dictionary skills with this activity. The children have lots of ideas in their mother tongue but don't nececcarily know the English. equivalent. My favourite online dictionary is www.pons.deIf you don't want to work with dictionaries, then the teacher can be a human dictionary. Children have to ask 'What's ... in English?'.I let the children work in pairs or teams with iPads or PCs and see how many words they can find in a given time.Why not give points too! If no else has the word, you get 2 points, if someone else has it, then you get just one.You can also use the Brown Owl busy autumn scene as a stimulus and to give them some ideas.N.B. You may find some of the words on the solution sheet a bit difficult for young learners. I just included them for the teachers and because I didn't want to have blank spaces.If you want to spend more time on the topic of autumn, I also have games to consolidate the key words, an autumn poem and story walk.Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!

BINGO is a great game to practise and consolidate vocabulary.It can be played as a class or in small groups with a quizmaster.I have included a set of picture/word cards for the quizmaster to draw at random. If you print two sets, they double up as a game of pairs too.If someone gets three pictures in a row, they shout LINE!If they get all nine pictures, they shout BINGO!I like to embed each word in a sentence so that the children are exposed to as much language as possible. E.g. Autumn leaves are falling down.In fact, the vocabulary in this game also comes up in my 'Brown Owl's Autumn' poem. You can take lines directly from it: e.g. Fog is hanging in the air. Little squirrels are collecting food.You can even have a pupil take on the role of quizmaster and come up with their own sentences. This is a great method to encourage authentic use of language and allow children to experiment with the language they know.I hope you have fun teaching English with Brown Owl!
