Brown Owl's Autumn - Simon Says

Simon Says is a really popular game among young learners. It gets them moving, gets them out of their seats and is fun.Furthermore it improves concentration and listening skills, and the actions help them to remember the language. This set of cards focusses on autumn vocabulary and activities.Rules of the game:If you say SIMON SAYS at the beginning of the sentence, children carry out the action. If you don't say SIMON SAYS, they should stand still. Anyone who does the action when they shouldn't, is out. I usually play a few practice rounds before enforcing this last rule. How to play:LEVEL 1 - single word levelSIMON SAYS you are a pumpkin / jack-o-lantern  / a crow / a bat etc.N.B. Don't read the sentences on the card. Just use the pictures and say the basic sentence: You are a ...LEVEL 2 - sentence levelUse the cards in this set and read the sentences. Children do the actions described.E.g. Simon Says you are jumping on a pile of leaves / You are a bat flying around etc.I hope you have fun playing autumn Simon Says with Brown Owl!TIP: the same vocabulary comes up in 'Brown Owl's Autumn' poem.Brown Owl is the star of my rhyming picture book series 'Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl'. Brown Owl's Busy Autumn Scene - Wimmelbild

It‘s autumn and Brown Owl and friends are busy in the forest. What can you see? What can you find? There are many different ways to use this busy autumn scene. Here are a few of my ideas:1) To revise autumn vocabulary that has previously been learned and to generate differentiated speaking opportunites.Children simply say what they can see. The closer they look, the more they'll find! Some children will give short answers: two bats / I can see two bats. Others will give longer ones: I can see two bats flying next to Cat. (Cat has a capital letter as it's her name in my rhyming stories).2) To introduce autumn vocabulary. Again I first see what the children know. If they use a word in their mother tongue, I give them the English (maybe write it on the board for older children) and we repeat it together with an action.3) To play a game of 'I spy'. This can also be played in pairs.Teacher: "I spy, with my little eye ... something orange!"Pupil: "Is it the pumpkin?"Teacher: "Yes, it is! / No, it isn't!"4) To practise reading and writing key autumn words (black and white versions).    5) To calm children down or to help them focus. The full colour verion can be printed on A3 and laminated. Children can find the objects listed at the side on their own.N.B. I have included a version without the written word so that this busy autumn  scene can be used with non-readers, at kindergarten or for teaching key words in other languages too.Using the same vocabulary I have also created a game of 'I have got ... Who has got ...?' and an autumn spotter's list,I hope you have fun learning English with Brown Owl!P.S. Brown Owl is the main character in my rhyming picture book series ‚Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl‘. For more information visit www.readandrhyme.at

Brown Owl's Autumn - Game Cards

Practise key autumn vocabulary with these game cards. 2 sets available: reader and non-readerIncludes: pumpkin, mushroom, acorn, apple, bat, leaves, crow, squirrel, mud, trees, fog and pine cone. They can be used for four different games:1) SNAP (2-4 players)Shuffle the cards and deal them between all players.Players put their cards in front of them, face down. Each player turns over a card and lays it in the middle. If two cards on top of each other are the same, players shout snap and place their hands in the middle. The fastest player wins the cards! The winner is the player with all the cards at the end of the game.2) PAIRS - use half the cardsMix the cards and spread them out face down on the table. Each player takes it in turns to choose two cards. If they are the same, they take the cards and turn over another two. The winner is the player with the most pairs at the end of the game.3) OLD MAID (3-4 players)The aim of the game is to have as many pairs as possible.Remove THREE crow cards. The crow is the old maid (schwarzer Peter)Shuffle the remaining cards and deal them between all players.Players look at their cards and place any PAIRS in front of them. Each player chooses one card to pass on and places it in front of them. Players count 3,2,1 and pass the card to the player on their left.If a player has a new pair, they place it on the table in front of them. The game carries on until one player has no cards left. The player with the most cards has won.Any player with the crow tries to pass it on as it does not have a pair.4) HAPPY FAMILIES (3-4 players)The aim of the game is to have as many sets of four same pictures as possible.Shuffle and deal all the cards between the players. If a player has a set of four, they can place it on the table in front of them.Any player starts and can ask another player for a card they need: Have you got a pumpkin? The other player responds with Yes, I have! OR No! I Haven't!The player can continue asking until someone says no.Play then passes to the next player. The game is over when one player has no cards left. The winner is the player with the most sets of four (Quartett)5) CHANGE PLACES - select a few sets of 4 cardsChildren sit in a circle. Each child gets a card. One chair is removed. A pupil stands in the middle and says an autumn word (the teacher can lead this activity at the beginning). The children with this picture stand up and change places. Now someone else hasn't got a seat and picks a word.If someone says "It's autumn" then everyone changes places.Have fun learning English with Brown Owl!For more information visit: www.readandrhyme.at
