SAVE RUDOLPH - Escape Room
Escape rooms are a motivating method for English lessons, in which students, either in small groups or individually, have to solve various challenges to determine the code needed to open a treasure chest (or another container). The puzzles in this escape room are designed for beginner English lessons. It is recommended to allocate 1-2 lessons for this activity.
The ”SAVE RUDOLPH - Escape Room" is well suited for English lessons around Christmas. The content deals with various tasks that are thematically related to Christmas. The focus is primarily on building vocabulary. Additionally, reading skills, as well as writing skills (post-work), are practiced.
CHALLENGES:
Challenge #1:
Santa‘s Reindeer The students read through the descriptions of the reindeer. The number of the description text is then added to the appropriate reindeer. By reading carefully, the pupils can answer the last question and get the solution number.
Challenge #2:
Crazy Christmas The students read through the text about Christmas, in which there are some mistakes. The number of errors in the reading text gives the number they are looking for.
Challenge #3:
Christmas Word Hunt In this puzzle, the students have to solve a crossword puzzle. The letters in the grey boxes of the puzzle give the number they are looking for for the code. This worksheet is also differentiated in two ways. The simplified version has some predefined letters.
Challenge #4:
Colourful Presents In this puzzle, the students should colour in the individual presents according to their word type. At the end, the number they are looking for can be determined for the challenge. This worksheet is differentiated in 2 ways.
EXTRA MATERIAL:
A MYSTERY LETTER (Extra Work):
This task is designed as an extra activity for faster students to prevent idle time. In this challenge, the pupils have to decipher a text in secret writing. It is a letter from Rudolph's kidnappers. Once the text has been deciphered and copied, it can be determined who kidnapped and imprisoned Rudolph. The letter is differentiated in two ways. In the simpler version, the letters of the cipher are given.
LET‘S WRITE A LETTER TO SANTA! (Post Work):
As a final task for the unit, or as homework, the students can write their own Christmas letter. They can be creative and let their imagination run wild. The possible wishes (toys) for the letter are listed. Additionally, this post-work activity is differentiated and provided at two levels. In the simplified version of this task, sentence starters and phrases are provided.

Escape rooms are a great way to organise a fun and meaningful lesson with students on topics such as Easter, Halloween or Christmas. But grammar topics can also be practised and consolidated very well with escape rooms! The advantage is that the concept of an escape room automatically motivates students and makes them open to solving tasks and exercises. You should plan 1-2 school hours to complete the unit.
