Escape rooms are a motivating method for English lessons, in which students, either in small groups or individually, must solve various puzzles (challenges) to determine the code for opening a treasure chest (or another container). The puzzles in this escape room are designed for beginner English lessons. You should plan for 1 to 2 lessons to carry out the activity.
The “SILVERBEARD’S TREASURE HUNT - Escape Room” is well suited for English lessons before the summer holidays. The content deals with various tasks that are thematically related to summer. The focus is primarily on developing vocabulary. Additionally, reading skills as well as writing skills are practiced.
The students read the text about the pirate girl carefully. After, they fill in the “Vocabulary” box and answer the questions with “true” or “false.” The number of correct (“true”) answers provides the number needed for the puzzle. This task is differentiated and provided at three levels. In one version of the exercise, a word box is provided to fill in the vocabulary, while in another version, the “difficult” words are already listed.
In this task, the students are supposed to solve a crossword puzzle. The letters in the grey boxes reveal the number needed. This exercise is differentiated. In the easier version, letters are already provided in the boxes of the puzzle.
In this task, the students have to decipher a text written in code. The text is a packing list. Once the text has been deciphered and transcribed, the corresponding suitcase can be identified, and the number needed for the puzzle can be determined. This puzzle is differentiated and provided at two levels. In the simplified version, the symbols of the secret code are already decoded and listed.
Here, the students should find the route to the treasure island by carefully reading the text. Once the route has been marked on the map, the students will identify the number of the treasure island.

This task is designed as an extra activity for faster students to prevent idle time. The students should answer questions related to summer.
As a final task for the unit, or as homework, students can colour a picture. The way in which the picture should be coloured is predefined. This helps practice different parts of speech, as the colours are assigned according to word types. This post-work activity is differentiated and provided at two levels.

Escape rooms are a great way to organise a fun and meaningful lesson with students on topics such as Easter, Halloween or Christmas. But grammar topics can also be practised and consolidated very well with escape rooms! The advantage is that the concept of an escape room automatically motivates students and makes them open to solving tasks and exercises. You should plan 1-2 school hours to complete the unit.
