I use this rhyme as a warm-up at the beginning of my English lessons. It works best if the children have been learning English for a couple of years.
Why I love this rhyme:
· It‘s a fun way to start off English lessons and gets everyone
speaking English right away.
· The rhythm and rhyme of the chant really help the children to
pick up the language quickly.
· The children really enjoy it, and it creates a positive learning
environment.
How to use this resource:
· I start by showing a cookie jar and seeing if the children know
what it is called in English.
· I show the children that the jar is empty and start the rhyme:
Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
· We practise each part of the rhyme together, including actions.
N.B. The flashcards are a visual back-up and divide the chant into
dialogue chunks.
· The children design their own cookie, cut it out, write their name
on the back and put it in jar.
· Once all the cookies are in, the class chants: Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
· The teacher chooses a cookie at random from the jar.
· The teacher reads out the name, e.g. Sara stole the cookie from the coookie jar! (The children can join in too).
· Sara answers: Who me?
· The class replies: Yes, you!
· Sara answers: Couldn‘t be!
· The class replies: Then who?
· Sara is allowed to choose the next cookie from the jar and
so it goes on.
- Why not take some real cookies in too and see who dares to 'steal' one?
