The irony of finding "freedom" by moving to America.

The constitution of the United States mentions the word “freedom” three times.

However, as a first generation immigrant of northern Europe I feel as though I have never been more restricted in my life.

I want to start by saying that I am well aware that I had the privilege of choosing to live in the US. I am immensely grateful to have come from a save home that I can return to at any time. It is that security that is making my attempts to immigrate permanently into the US easier – I fall softly. I am also aware that many other people come to America, because they are search of a better life. This article is not about that, because I am not able to speak to what that experience feels like. What I know is how the day to day life and planning for the future in the US differs from the daily life in Germany and how the concept of “freedom” has a different touch in the US.
