Get your students moving and speaking English with this Four Corners activity on Guy Fawkes Night. Using 10 discussion questions with four answer options each, students choose a position, move to the corresponding corner of the classroom, and explain their choice to their classmates. The activity combines speaking and listening practice with cultural topics surrounding Guy Fawkes Night and the Gunpowder Plot.
The material provides everything you need to run the activity:
Presentation: ready-to-use Four Corners slides with 10 questions and four answer options each
How to Play slide: clear instructions that can be projected directly for the class
Class Reflection worksheet: students reflect on the discussions, their own choices, and what they learned about their classmates
creative follow-up task: students create their own Guy Fawkes Night Four Corners question with four possible answers
sentence starters: language support such as “I chose … because …”, “My favourite is … because …” and “In my opinion, …”
Teacher’s Note: learning objectives, differentiation ideas, preparation instructions, and a suggested lesson sequence
Project the included presentation and show one question at a time. Students decide which of the four answers best represents their opinion and move to the corresponding corner. There, they discuss their choices, give reasons, listen to different perspectives, and prepare an idea to share with the class.
The complete activity is designed for approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on class size and the length of the discussions. You can use all 10 questions or select individual slides to fit the time available. Afterwards, the reflection worksheet provides a structured written follow-up.
