Explore Thanksgiving beyond turkey and pumpkin pie with an English reading comprehension activity that combines cultural knowledge, history and different perspectives on the holiday. The reading text takes students from the harvest gathering involving English settlers and Wampanoag people in 1621 to the development of Thanksgiving as a national holiday and its modern traditions. Importantly, it also introduces the consequences of European colonisation for Native communities and explains why Thanksgiving can have different meanings for different people.
A ready-to-use warm-up question – “What comes to your mind when you hear ‘Thanksgiving’?” – can be used to activate prior knowledge before reading. Students then work through the informational text and transfer relevant details to the visually structured fact file on page 3.
The main activity is designed for approximately 20–30 minutes. Students who need additional support can work with a partner or highlight relevant passages before completing the fact file. Early finishers can move on to the reflection task and explain in 4–6 sentences why learning about different perspectives on Thanksgiving is important.
