Bring Guy Fawkes Night and the Gunpowder Plot into the English classroom through communication and creative writing. Students first move around the classroom and exchange ideas in a “Find Someone Who” activity. They then travel back to 1605 and write a secret warning letter about the plot against the Houses of Parliament. This way, British history and traditions become the basis for meaningful speaking, listening and writing practice.
The material combines communicative activities with a creative historical writing task:
Find Someone Who activity: Students talk to different classmates and find someone who matches statements about Guy Fawkes Night, fireworks, bonfires, traditions and the historical background.
Secret Warning Letter: Students imagine they are living in 1605 and have heard about a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They write an anonymous letter warning someone about the danger.
Sentence starters: Useful phrases such as “I am writing to warn you …” and “Please stay away from …” provide language support during the writing task.
Breaking News follow-up: Newspaper templates allow students to imagine it is 6 November 1605 and create a headline about the events.
Differentiation task: Early finishers or students looking for an additional challenge plan a class Guy Fawkes Night celebration and explain their choices of activities, food and decorations.
Solutions and teacher’s notes: Sample answers, learning objectives, differentiation ideas and a suggested lesson sequence support your preparation.
Start with the “Find Someone Who” activity to get students moving and speaking English with different classmates. Afterwards, introduce the historical scenario for the Secret Warning Letter. Students use the provided sentence starters to write from the perspective of someone living in 1605. The newspaper headline can then serve as a short creative follow-up.
The activities are designed for approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on the age of the students and the depth of discussion. Preparation is simple: print one copy of the “Find Someone Who” worksheet and one writing sheet per student. No additional materials are required.
💡 Differentiation included: Students who need more support can use question starters, key vocabulary and the sentence starters provided. Stronger learners can give more detailed answers, include additional historical details or complete the extension task.
