DAZ DAF INTERMEDIATE GERMAN SPEAKING ACTIVITIES ADVANCED GERMAN SPEAKING PRACTICE 100 PAIRED SPEAKING PROMPTS CARDS WITH REFERENCE BOOKLET,  PLANNING BOOKLET AND TRANSLATION WORKBOOK FOCUS ON GERMAN SEPARABLE VERBS IN THE PRESENT TENSE

These German paired speaking prompt cards an ideal way to promote speaking in German class. Working in small groups or pairs helps students feel confident about talking in German without feeling ‘on the spot’, or worried about not getting their pronunciation and accent right in front of the whole class. The prompt cards offer structured talk opportunities, and feature vocabulary, structures and general knowledge that students are generally engaging with from intermediate German level moving into advanced intermediate, with some reference to advanced German, with a particular focus on German separable verbs in the present tense. Students often find German separable verbs quite challenging, particularly in more complex sentences, such as those with modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions, which alter the location of the separable prefix. The CEFR level is roughly A2-B2, with occasional elements of C1.

The prompt cards also address a broad range of grammar, such as tense, mood, modal verbs, adjectival endings, subordinating conjunctions, possessive adjectives and word order. The range of vocabulary featured in the set is broad, which will enrich students’ German in general, and which also makes conversational / spoken German more realistic and communicative. Students may not have engaged with all the language used at this stage, and this makes the activity equally about engaging implicitly with new language, as well as practising and reinforcing the current language focus.

Language varies from fairly straightforward questions such as Weißt du, wann unser nächster Klassenausflug stattfindet? to questions which prompt more involved and complex exchanges, for example Wie gibt man am besten Speicherplatz auf der Festplatte frei? or Was kann man deiner Meinung nach am einfachsten recyceln und wiederverwenden? Both the questions and answers are a starting point: as students develop more skill and confidence in their German, they recreate either similar exchanges, or create entirely new ones, using the given language as a frame of reference. This also helps them develop independent learning and creative writing skills, making the activities really useful for multi-skill language learning. Questions and answers can be as basic or as complex as students feel comfortable with. As a preliminary activity, it’s useful for students to work with the suggested questions and responses, moving on to asking a given question, with the talk partner creating a new response. Students can also select a given response, with the talk partner creating a new, related question.

The set also provides students with an opportunity to develop their translation skills in German from the beginning of their learning, which is very important: they see that ‘word for word’ is rarely, if ever, accurate, and that a correct translation means correctly conveying the meaning of a clause or sentence, rather than every word that appears in it. The set works equally well for developing writing skills in German.

The set comprises the following non-editable files in a zipped format:

= 100 cards, 50 questions and 50 suggested responses in German (10 cards per page, 10 pages) Laminate these if possible, as they’re easier to manipulate, and they remain in excellent condition for years, so they can used many times

= reference booklet containing all the questions and answers in both German and English

= translation activity booklet, translating from German into English

= planning booklet - if students don’t have class workbooks, they can use the sheets to make notes as they create new questions and responses, and write their completed versions out in full. These sheets are also useful for more formal assessment purposes if required.

The Lively Learning Classroom offers a wide range of DaZ / DaF German resources, including special offer bundles and freebies.
