With this material, you will be able to create a complete unit to work on Mudejar art, tessellation techniques, perspective, and composition.
To introduce the topic, students will receive a letter from a medieval king asking them to study Mudejar art and later create a decoration for his castle. From there, they will carry out an individual research project where they must learn about the characteristics of Mudejar art. Afterwards, worksheets will be distributed to guide their work.
Students will create different geometric decorations to make a frieze. They will work in groups. Templates are available to assist them.
To work with tessellation, students will practice using a worksheet that explains how to create tiles starting from a square. After practicing the technique, they will design several original patterns.
Using a free template, they will create a decorative frieze in groups. After practicing with tiles, they will collaboratively design a unique pattern. They will prepare salt dough, roll it out with a rolling pin, and cut out the pieces they designed. These pieces will be decorated and glued onto cardboard. This decoration can be combined with a frieze made of triangular green tiles. The result will look fantastic, and they will have completed the challenge!
You will find many worksheets to study perspective from a theoretical point of view. Students will learn about vanishing points, the horizon line, etc. They will complete the activities and decorate them freely.
There are also worksheets to work on geometric proportions and types of composition, allowing students to practice and learn to interpret which type of composition might appear in a photograph or painting.
Activity with Parents: Using a worksheet explaining concepts of proportion, students will take a photograph of an interesting element in their surroundings with their families, using a different perspective.
Scratching Technique: On a sheet from their sketchbook, students will color with hard wax crayons in various shades. The design will be free. Next, they will mix black tempera paint with liquid dish soap and spread it over the surface. Finally, they will use a toothpick to scratch patterns into the surface.
Perspective: Use the template to create a small perspective artwork.
With the template, students can design a room and assemble it in perspective. Look at the photos to see how it turns out.
Use the worksheet to create a 3D representation of your name.
