Rhymes play an essential role in learning and teaching English.
Rhymes help children to remember and internalize words and phrases.
Rhymes teach the sound and rhythm of the language.
Rhymes are pleasing to the ear and are fun!
I regularly use rhymes as part of my routines in the English classroom. Whether it is a rhyme to warm up, a prayer to start the day or a choosing rhyme to pick a pupil, the children are exposed to the rhymes so often, that they soon memorise them and use them actively themselves.
I have put together this collection of my favourite rhymes. The colour version can be used as part of a classroom display and the b&w version is for the children to colour and keep .
Alternatively children can make their own mini book of the all the rhymes at the beginning of the school year. As they learn each rhyme, or once they can read it independently or say it off by heart, they can colour it in.
The characters in the illustrations are taking from my rhyming picture book series 'Read and Rhyme with Brown Owl'.
