My name is Brown Owl. I live in this tree.Christmas is coming. Let's visit Mum's family.Brown Owl introduces children to British Christmas traditions as he visits Mum's family down in Devon. It includes key words and phrases from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl's Christmas in Devon'.1) Learn key words from the story. Practise key words before AND/OR after reading my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl's Christmas in Devon'.These wordmats can be used in lots of different ways:1) I spy with my little eye … A Christmas tree! (children point at the tree or place their rubber on it, for example).  This can also be done as pairwork.2) colour dictation - I spy with my little eye … a blue bauble!3) bingo - each child chooses three pictures and places something on them, e.g. counters/glass nuggets.  The teacher draws the picture cards at random and once their three have been called, the children shout 'Bingo!'.This can also be played in groups with a bingo master for each group.4) hide the wordcards / flashcards around the room and the children label the pictures themselves = copy-writingDifferentiation: they use a pencil to write the words how they think they are spelt and then find the word cards in the room to check their work.Have fun reading and rhyming with Brown Owl!   For more information about my series of rhyming picture books, please visit www.readandrhyme.at

Quizzes are a real attention grabber and expose children to lots of vocabulary. They also improve listening and concentration skills.What am I? 1. I am little.2. I am loud.3. I am yellow.4. You can ring me.Solution: I am a bell!Children can test their knowledge of 15 Christmas words, whilst also practising reading, speaking & listening skills.Variation 1: The teacher reads the clues one by one to the class.    Variation 2: Partner/group work: A quiz master reads the clues one by one. How fast can your partner/the children guess the word? The first to guess wins the card.N.B.
