While the big "Mindfulness" industry is now filled with various phone/on-line applications and on-location programs giving people guided instructions on how to practice being centered, the more authentic practice of attentiveness (or meditation) happens in silent settings. People nowadays are so used to being flooded with daily constant visual and auditory noise, that the prospect of sitting in silence seems very challenging. That is because when we are sitting in silence trying to just observe our breath, our thoughts, jumping like a monkey from topic to topic at the speed of a race car, take center stage. With dedicated practice, one learns to allow those thoughts to come and go, in the same way that all our other sensations (subtle or intense) come and go.
