This card game is designed to help students practise forming questions and short answers using the present simple tense with opinion verbs such as like, dislike, love, and hate, while also reinforcing fruit-related vocabulary.
Overview:
This activity is a variation of the classic card game Go Fish. The goal is for students to collect as many pairs of matching cards as possible by asking questions and listening for the correct short answers.
Preparation:
The teacher should print two copies of the card set. Shuffle the cards and deal them to the students:
5 cards per student in standard groups
7 cards in smaller groups
3 cards in larger groups
Place the remaining cards face down in a pile in the centre of the table.
How to Play:
Students take turns clockwise. On their turn, a student asks a classmate if they have a specific card by reading aloud the question written on one of their cards (e.g. “Do you like apples?”).
If the classmate has the matching card, they must respond with the appropriate short answer (e.g. “Yes, I do.”) and hand over the card. The asking student then places the pair in front of them and takes another turn.
If the classmate does not have the card, they reply with a negative short answer (e.g. “No, I don’t.”). The rest of the group says “Go Fish”, and the student who asked must draw one card from the pile.
Winning the Game:
The game continues until all cards have been paired. The student with the most pairs at the end is the winner.
