This resource includes a board with 30 numbered squares and 30 cards, each containing a question in indirect speech. Players must transform the statement into reported speech beginning with “Mary asked me…”.
Materials needed:
- Ice lolly sticks
- Permanent markers or stickers to write numbers and words
- Timer
- A container, such as a pencil pot, cup, glass, or small bucket
Set-up:
Write the numbers and corresponding statements on the popsicle sticks, or cut out and attach the words to them. Place all the sticks in the container.
How to play:
The game can be played in pairs or teams. On their turn, each student draws a stick from the pot and must form the sentence corresponding to that number.
To make the game more engaging, some sticks have special instructions:
- Boom – the student returns all collected sticks to the pot
- Super Boom – both teams return all sticks and the game restarts
- Steal 1 – take one stick from the opposing team
- Exchange – both teams swap one stick
- Bonus – keep the stick and take another turn
- Miss a turn – skip a turn
Winning:
The winner is the player or team with the most sticks when time is up. For an extra challenge, add the numbers on the sticks as points — the team with the highest total score wins.
