Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is a popular celebration in Britain. It takes place on the last Tuesday before Lent.Traditionally, pancakes are made and eaten on this day. Schools and towns also organise pancake races, where you have to run and toss a pancake at the same time.I like to carry out this tradition in my English lessons too. Either the children can practise their tossing/flipping skills with a fake pancake (see reel below) and count how many times they can do it in a minute, or we go outside in the playground and hold pancake races.Pancake Tossing ReelThese certificates can be printed in full colour or black & white. If you'd like to go into the topic in more detail, check out my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix'.

Children love colouring. It is relaxing, calming and good for their fine motor skills and creativity. These colouring pages are taken from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl's Christmas in Devon'. Children can revisit the story and their favourite characters. You could even use the pictures for a colour dictation too: e.g. Colour the tree green! Colour the fire orange! etc.Have fun reading, rhyming and colouring with Brown Owl!For more info about my series of rhyming picture books, please visit:www.readandrhyme.at

Play a game of hide & seek AND practise a simple verse from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl and the Bee Hive'.Step 1) Colour, cut and stick the bees onto pegs.N.B. If the children want to keep their own pegs after the game, write their names on them too. If you are creating a game for the class to use regularly, this is not necessary.Step 2) Go outside and hide the bees by pegging them onto plants, grass, trees or anything you can find!Remember to count the pegs first AND define which area of the garden you are playing in, or your could end up looking for the bees for hours!!!Step 3) Everyone says the verse together:Bees are buzzing in the grass, bees are buzzing in the air,Bees are buzzing here, there and everywhere! The children then run off and look for the bees.My children like to peg them onto their clothing so that their hands are free for looking.Step 4) Once all the bees have been found, take it in turns to hide them and play again!Extension: Ask the children where they found the bees! In the grass / in the flowers / in the trees etc.Have fun reading and rhyming with Brown Owl and the Bee Hive!www.readandrhyme.at
