Escape rooms are a motivating method for English lessons, in which students, either in small groups or individually, have to solve various puzzles (challenges) to determine the code needed to open a treasure chest (or another container). The puzzles in this escape room are designed for beginner English lessons. It is recommended to allocate 1-2 lessons for this activity.
The ”COCO’S CRAZY CARNIVAL - Escape Room" is suited for English lessons around the Carnival festivities. The content deals with various tasks that are thematically related to Carnival. The focus is primarily on building vocabulary. Additionally, reading skills, as well as writing skills (post-work), are practiced.
Challenge #1: Colourful sweets
In this puzzle, the pupils should colour in the individual sweets according to their word type. At the end, the number they are looking for can be determined for the puzzle. This exercise is differentiated in 2 ways.
Challenge #2: Costume word hunt
In this task, the pupils are asked to solve a crossword puzzle. This puzzle is differentiated twice. In the simpler version, a few letters are given in the boxes of the puzzle.
Challenge #3: Coco‘s crazy poem
In this task, the pupils have to decipher a text. The text is a poem. As soon as the text has been deciphered and copied, the required number for the puzzle can be determined. This puzzle is also differentiated. In the simplified version, the symbols of the cipher are already decoded and listed.
Challenge #4: A funny costume party
In this puzzle, the pupils read the text accompanying the picture carefully. They then compare the picture with the text. There are several mistakes in the text. The number of errors found gives the number required for the puzzle.
WRITING TASK (Post Work):
At the end of the unit, or as homework, the pupils can design their own costume. Pupils can be creative and let their imagination run wild. Their costume should then be described. This material is differentiated. There is also a simplified version with a word box containing useful vocabulary and sentence starters.
SPEAKING TASK (Post Work):
To round off the ‘Carnival’ theme, the pupils can present their costume. There is a ‘help card’ with sentence starters and phrases to help them with their presentation.
