This resource contains a board with 30 numbered squares and 30 cards featuring sentences with gaps to be filled using both the past simple and past continuous forms of the verbs in brackets.

We also include an interactive version suitable for use on electronic devices.

On the one hand, this game can be played as a traditional board game with counters and dice. In this version, students take turns rolling the dice and moving their counters to the corresponding square. Then, they choose the matching card and complete the sentence with the past simple or past continuous form of the verb in brackets.

On the other hand, the game can be adapted and played using the rules outlined below.

For this version, the following materials will be required: popsicle sticks, permanent markers or stickers for writing the numbers and words, a timer, and a container such as a pencil pot, glass, cup, or small bucket. First, write the numbers and words on the popsicle sticks or attach the words using stickers. Then, place all the sticks into the container.

This version can be played in pairs or teams. Each student takes turns drawing a stick from the container and completing the sentence that corresponds to the number on the stick.

To make the game more entertaining, you can add specific action sticks with the following rules:

“Boom”: The student must return all the sticks they have collected to the pot.

“Super Boom”: Both teams must return all their sticks to the pot, and the game restarts.

“Steal 1”: A student steals a stick from the opposing team.

“Exchange”: Both teams exchange one stick.

“Bonus”: The team keeps the stick and takes another turn.

“Miss a turn”: The team skips their next turn.

The winner of the game is the team or player who has collected the most sticks when the timer runs out.

For an extra challenge, instead of counting sticks, you can assign points to the numbers written on the sticks and total these at the end. The winner will then be the team with the highest score.
