Lesson plan including material and a card game (adapted version of werewolf) for EFL/ESL classrooms

Description:

The lesson provides an introduction to activate the students' previous knowledge on the topic of Sherlock Holmes and detective stories. This is then linked to new knowledge (via PowerPoint, handout and a video). Finally, the students are asked to become detectives themselves and use the vocabulary they have learnt. For this purpose, the card game Werewolf was adapted for this lesson and called "The Midnight Society". The specific instructions for the game, as well as an accompanying PowerPoint with a short back story, are also included in this pack.

The game can also be used individually and is a good end-of-year activity. It is recommended to play the game with the students more often so that they learn to develop strategies and formulate arguments.

Goals:
To give students a better understanding of the character Sherlock Holmes, the author Arthur Conan Doyle, and the genre of detective stories. In addition, their skills in the areas of reading comprehension, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative storytelling will be encouraged. Through the game The Midnight Society (adapted version of Werewolf), students learn to form an opinion, to argue, and to speak in a foreign language in front of their classmates.
