Pancake Day - CERTIFICATES

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is a popular celebration in Britain. It takes place on the last Tuesday before Lent.Traditionally, pancakes are made and eaten on this day. Schools and towns also organise pancake races, where you have to run and toss a pancake at the same time.I like to carry out this tradition in my English lessons too. Either the children can practise their tossing/flipping skills with a fake pancake (see reel below) and count how many times they can do it in a minute, or we go outside in the playground and hold pancake races.Pancake Tossing ReelThese certificates can be printed in full colour or black & white. If you'd like to go into the topic in more detail, check out my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix'.

Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix - Vocabulary Dice

These dice can be used to help children remember key vocabulary linked to PANCAKE DAY. The vocabulary also comes up in my rhyming picture book: Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix.Set one includes the main ingredients and utenstils: eggs, milk, flour, spoon, bowl, fryingpanSet two includes 6 different toppings: lemon, sugar, jam, ham, chocolate spread, ice cream. Each set is available in full colour (teacher makes them), black and white (children make their own) and with the words on for matching activities. How to use the dice:1) Roll your dice and say what you see.2) Guess/predict what you‘ll get, then roll the dice and see3) Roll a picture dice and a word dice. Do the picture and word match? Have you got a pair? 4) Play the above with a partner. Player one has the word dice, player two the picture dice. Can you roll a pair? 5) Can't decide which topping to eat? Roll the dice and see what you get!Have fun reading, rhyming & learning English with Brown Owl!'Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix' is written by Rachel Schmidlechner and illustrated by Nadja Grace Bodner. Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix - STORY STICKS

Story Sticks have many uses. The main use is to RETELL a story. This can be done by the teacher, who uses the story sticks instead of showing the pages in the book.It can also be done by the pupils in a group, in pairs or individually.I also like to let the children choose two/three of their favourite pictures, colour & create their own story sticks, and then hold them up when they hear the word in the story. After the story they can take their sticks home as a reminder of the lesson. Maybe they’ll even talk about it when they get home and remember the language too.The story sticks can also be used for a game of ‚I spy‘. E.g. I spy, with my little eye, EGGS! (children hold up the stick if they have it) & for playing change places in a circle. E.g. Change places if you have got the milk/eggs/bowl etc.Maybe you can think of another use too? Please let me know if you do!ADVANTAGES OF STORY STICKSThey encourage interaction They aid language comprehension They improve listening skillsThey revise vocabulary They keep hands busyThey promote teamwork (if retelling in a group)I laminated the coloured version so that I can use them many times. The children get the black & white paper version to colour & create themselves.I hope you have fun retelling and learning the words from my rhyming picture book 'Brown Owl and the Pancake Mix'.For more information about my rhyming picture books, please visit: www.readandrhyme.at
