Aims. This learning material aims at self-directed learning in homeschooling, distance learning and free learning situations at school. It is provided to help the students‘ learning about new topics in biology and to support their self-directed study.
The learning material is also suitable for students who have been ill or haven’t understood a biological topic. These students can catch up the contents by self-learning with this learning material at their own pace.
The digital package is designed for learning platforms of schools. The students should be able to download the biological learning units.
Structure. This digital learning material comprises an explaining introduction with a speaker and with pictures and texts on pdf or powerpoint pages. The following parts are included:
Procedure. The worksheets appear during the introducing pages. When the student clicks on them he will open them and can download or write directly in there. The immediate match between introduction and worksheet fosters active learning. Students also may download the worksheets and fill in at the end of the unit. The solutions are on an extra pdf so that the teacher may decide when he offers the solutions to his students. Perhaps the teacher uploads the solutions onto the school platform and activates the solution files at a certain time. Or the students can decide themselves when to download the files.
Tasks. Some of the tasks are given without a worksheet. Students are asked to write in their biology booklet for instance designing a page about a special animal. Other tasks guide the students outsides. This is an important activity for the comprehension of biology. In this way students construct knowledge about nature and may develop a nature protecting attitude.
Performing experiments is equally important. So, the material contains instruction manuals for experimental work. These experiments can be performed at home. A laboratory protocol is demanded. In this way the learning material supports understanding the nature of science.
Self-testing. At the end of each unit there is a self-testing. Students may control themselves whether they know the subject matters or whether they should repeat aspects of the topic. This is an important step for being motivated to self-directed learning. Finally, the student can download the self-control and go through it.
The audio-file functions well with the Adobe Acrobat Reader and PDF XChange Viewer, but unfortunately not with every pdf-program.
