Let's bring Guy Fawkes Night and the Gunpowder Plot into the English classroom with a combination of movement, discussion, reading and reflection. Students first explore the topic through a communicative Four Corners activity before working with a reading text on the historical background and reflecting on how societies remember historical events and traditions. The Four Corners activity itself takes approximately 10–20 minutes, depending on class size and discussion length.
The activities build on one another while also allowing you to choose individual elements for your lesson:
two Four Corners sets: four statement cards about history and traditions and four illustrated picture cards connected to Guy Fawkes Night
Language Help cards with sentence starters such as “I choose … because …” and “From my point of view …” to support classroom discussion
introductory worksheet with a mind map and picture-based prediction task
reading text: “From a Secret Plot to a British Tradition” introduces the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, Guy Fawkes and the origins of Bonfire Night
reading follow-up tasks for revisiting initial predictions and putting key historical events in chronological order
reflection worksheet that encourages students to discuss different views on history and traditions and consider what traditions should be kept, changed or newly created
Print and cut out either the statement cards or picture cards and place them in four corners of the classroom. Students choose the corner that best represents their opinion or choice, discuss their reasoning within the group and then share selected ideas with the class. For repeated use, the cards can be printed on thicker paper and laminated.
The Four Corners activity provides a communicative introduction to the topic before students move on to the reading tasks. The included sentence starters offer additional language support, while the final reflection goes beyond reading comprehension and invites the class to think about history, remembrance and the role of traditions.
